Re: Are we in Alpha?

This forum isn't very pretty from the point of view of an intermittent lurker. I'm looking for cool stories, stuff to explore, and NPC villains and monsters for PCs to go fight. I don't particularly care where in Middle-earth that stuff is even set. I'm not really up for crafting and shops and stuff...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

I for one won't be returning to play for as long as PC-centric armed conflict between two neighbouring settlements remains a core focus of the game. I long ago got worn out with that sort of thing and just want to have characters fighting NPCs.

Re: Trust

Apparently the temptation to nitpick at one of Kory's posts is enough to make me log in. Armageddon is a poor example of how to do it right. I remember explaining that at length to people on the old ARPI chat. Its guidelines may look solid, but it turns out that they're just awful in practice. A lot...

Re: Resident suggest/question?

Throwing empty bins at people would probably do it too. The room capacity code as is is easily exploited and would probably need to be rewritten to account for objects being put in containers as well as just being dropped in the room - it's been a while, but I'm pretty sure it only looks for objects...

Re: The great wishlist

I've only been skimming the forums, but you guys are making some odd assumptions about people who played leadership characters extensively on Atonement (or the few months of Parallel). I'm pretty sure most of them aren't playing new SoI. Matt, maybe? Kory's primary function at the moment appears to ...

Re: And I thought I was an addict (old SOI stats)

Am I the only person currently posting on the forum that hasn't been an admin for SoI /Atonement/Parallel? It feels like it sometimes! :P I've gone ahead and retroactively made your account an admin over on Parallel. <3 You're not alone any longer, Brian - though I've been floating around since I t...

Re: Kirking it Up: The Red Shirt Syndrome

When playing any sort of combat leader on an RPI - and I think I've played a few decent ones - I feel that it becomes a decidedly gamey role. I spend an inordinate amount of time checking people's health/general status, tracking where in the world my party is, constantly trying to figure what sort o...

Good grief. 351 days? Go go undergrad time.

Looking at Daven's - why didn't he just go by Dave? - clans, warsheep stands out. I remember the warsheep. :D

Re: Increased player count, what brought you back?

I'm not back, but I was prompted by a message left elsewhere to at least check out the forum. My favourite part of RPIs has almost always been adventuring and the stories it spawns (or the jokes - ominous curtains, bricks cunningly disguised as blocks of gold etc). I'm not so keen on it at all when ...

Re: Let's Play: Dominions 4

Niche strategy games are a bad habit of mine - the main culprits are usually Matrix Games/Slitherine, and Battlefront. I'll keep an eye on this one.

Holmes' Steam friends list makes me feel hopelessly inadequate. :P

The game already felt like Survival Horror: Middle-earth edition. Weather changes and such just seem to reinforce that as the staff vision, but I don't know if it is or not.

Re: Dual-wield vs shield-use

Sole-wield is just objectively bad. People ran tests on both ARPI and PRPI with mobs pitted against each other dozens of times over, or dozens of mobs against each other all at once. Dual-wield is always, always better, whether with a weapon and shield or two weapons. Sole-wield's only saving grace ...

The argument was made that nobody outside of a certain group of players has actually tried to do anything. It was refuted. Hardly bickering.

I tried my damnedest, then got shot down by staff, on an OOC level, because I didn't move in one of two approved OOC circles.

That's not even hyperbole.

Re: Concerns and Constructive Criticism

Utterby is a testing ground for the primary game. That's all it is. That's my opinion of it. So what if some guys worked and got a camp, right? They worked for it, they earned it. If you have a problem with that, bust your own ass and work for something else. I've seen stuff done in the Orc Sphere ...

Re: (The State of) PvP

The engine isn't very good at supporting vast numbers of NPCs, but I still far, far prefer a stack of NPCs to PvP. I think the most NPCs that were ever tried was when the Haradrim assaulted Caolafon. Quite literally the entire force on both sides was given NPC representation. As it turned out, the W...

Re: Concerns and Constructive Criticism

When talking about the Guard leaders: the ones that apped in with the Hillmen, received positions with no apparent IC reason, and heaped praises on the Hillmen rather than going with the general town view at the time that the Hillmen should be evicted? Just so we're on the same page. People keep say...

Here goes again, I guess, but in more detail, because linking to an external forum where the problems are expanded on is apparently a way...

Re: Starting skill levels & combat skillgains

Parallel had solid clans in place from the very beginning, with people who knew how dangerous it was and understood how to keep people alive. SoI doesn't, and people don't seem willing to learn how dangerous it is, since they continue to run out and die. I would say that's one huge cause for a disp...
