Re: Character Generation announcement and number of skills

Best of luck with it, then. While I'd really like to play a Tolkien-based game again, I know from my own experience that I don't enjoy playing on games that use systems like this one.

Character Generation announcement and number of skills

I'm running out the door, so I'll keep this brief. I think I understand why the mechanic of dividing skill points equally among skills was chosen (which is that it certainly has to be simpler), but the interpretation stated in Octavius's post, which is that characters who pick 6-8 skills are inexper...

Re: Laketown & Surrounds Artwork/Maps

One thing about the last sketch is that it doesn't seem to show dedicated "service" wharves for loading and unloading of large amounts of cargo. I can't imagine having to deal with cargo in the walkways in front of a building; that's why we have alleys and service courts. I'd imagine something like ...

Re: Website

I'm glad that permission has been given, though having a link to that on something like a frame for the banner images themselves might be best. When I looked at Howe's site, all the images I saw were small - likely no more than 400 px wide at 72 dpi. I certainly understand why he'd do that, but it m...

Re: Website

I'd rather have no graphics on the site than something with a big (pixilated) "(c) 2004 http://john-howe.com" like is currently in the rotating banner on the front page. I think that unless there's clear permission to use artwork that Middle-Earth Enterprises i.e. Saul Zaentz might possibly think th...

Re: An RPP system with increased granularity

Playing a temp character can be a lot of fun. In fact, some of the most fun I've had recently was on a MUSH that was starting into a big scene but because of a sudden staff shortage didn't have anyone to set it, do atmosphere emits, and play a necessary character. Even though I had just finished cha...

Re: Dwarven and Elven Crafting

As to your next point about the code standpoint, this was attempted on SoI2. It was called the Power stat, and though I believe it had great potential in creating those distinctions, it was never fully realized and only brought to a half implementation that I think was ultimately unsatisfactory for...

Utterby is a fortified lumber camp-like town in the eaves of Mirkwood.
Sort of like Presbyterian Church, Washington (for anyone who has seen McCabe and Mrs. Miller)? But without the church, of course. :D

Of course. :D But would people be so offended of the idea if it weren't for "Ew, the dwarf's a male and the elf's a female. Therefore they might have sex"? Which... I think we can all agree there's nothing but the extremely slimmest chance of that happening, even in the movie. For my part, I'd be e...

Re: Orc Play!

Key point - Every orc PC needs a purpose other than killing. Failing to have one will result in ill-advised forays out to do the only thing that PC can do, either to other PC orcs or on a solo jaunt into the wild to kill ... whatever. So, if all orcs fight, and all orcs have rudimentary options to ...

It's doing the same thing for me (directing to the old site if I don't use www. in front), and I had never visited the old site in this browser on this machine. Chrome 31.0.1650.63 on MacOS 10.8.5.

Re: Desolation of Smaug

Regarding the interspecies romance, I keep expecting to hear at any moment that Christopher Tolkien has been felled by a stroke. And, seriously, that's the bad thing; thanks to stuff like this, the chances of someone get permission to adapt something else for the screen that wasn't included in Tolki...

Re: SoI 2014 Player Overview

In many ways, I don't want to own up to my previous playing. I made a lot of embarrassing, stupid, and angst-ridden choices with my one long-term character on SoI, choices that are anathema to the way I play today. Moreover, I retired that character to take up a staff position from which I spectacul...

Re: Crafting/Skills/Races

On a game where total stats/attributes are set permanently but you can learn/increase any skill simply by doing...this system has some rather obvious downsides player-side. Who would be anything above 18 to start with? I'm not sure that I follow your question, tehkory, probably because I'm no longe...

Re: An RPP system with increased granularity

Please ignore this suggestion if it's something that's already done. Most of the games I've played on that have a staff-managed point system have usually relied on staff reviewing logs. I've forgotten how logs work on SoI, but I seem to remember that you couldn't really publicly submit any logs with...

Re: Crafting/Skills/Races

Burke - that is a good point to discuss. How about this as an idea for brainstorming? What if character age lowered attributes and added skill points? Being an old person IRL, I would also find it realistic. :) Even on systems that don't do this automatically, if I have control of attributes as wel...

Re: Crafting/Skills/Races

The skill list brings up something that is the brick wall I've hit on SoI and everyt other code-heavy game I've played. It is necessary to have skills start at a basic level and advance, not only for character "growth" and to discourage munchkins, but also because some people really get off on advan...

Definitely what Brian said, though with the caveat that Tolkien didn't really articulate this conception of the world as Morgoth's Ring until after The Lord of the Rings was published. I know it's at best quasi-canonical, but the volume Morgoth's Ring is certainly one of my favorite in the History o...

Re: Dwarves & Elves

I think that's a really solid choice Icarus, and will also allow for the Elves to be really textured individuals with passions, quirks, fears, loves, and all the things that are more accessibly human than the lofty, but in many ways detached, sadness of the High Elves. Seconded. As much as I absolu...

Re: Economics!

I, too, haven't played on a game with a heavily coded economy for a long time. In fact, one of the only decent economic system I've seen from a player's perspective was on SoI circa 2005, and that may have seemed decent to me because I never got into chasing wealth. The other decent game economy I'v...

Elves - agreed with Feawen on the Silvan/Sindar presence in the game. I had a chat with Frigga on this the other day and I think we're both excited to see a different take on the portrayal of Silvan Elves - a little more down to earth, prone to making errors in judgement, and largely not charged by...

Re: Desolation of Smaug

I probably shouldn't make this my first post here, but I thought An Unexpected Journey not only failed as an adaptation but also failed to be a decent movie. I went from nearly being in tears over getting to return to Middle Earth to wanting to walk out because I was so irritated and bored. I'm not ...
