Re: Non-Combatant RPTS (Not for Guard Use)

I wouldn't call it an RPT, but there is a (very) small event - say 20-30 minutes - planned for this Wednesday, October 4th, around midnight UTC (7 Central, 8 Eastern).

See the IG board to decide if you or your character would be interested.

So Rivean the player breaks out immersion, but not Rivean's character.

Kill the immersion breaker!
What if I'm an elf? Betcha didn't think of that!

Re: PC Hair Length

Personally, I have known plenty of people in serious, third-world, no running water poverty with perfectly decent long hair. That having been said, I find many people do tend to keep it braided - and sometimes covered as well. Various sources (check Wikipedia for some examples, if you like) suggest...

Re: Mission

I am incredibly heartened by this.

Reading this post has tipped me over the fence and I will do all I can to play and to stick with the game till we once again resemble what I remember from oh so many years ago (rose-tinted nostalgia notwithstanding).

Re: Opening General Discussion

There was a not-so-brief period of time when I was convinced I was done with MUDS, and with SOI in particular - I even wrote up a really angry post about the state of the game on that shadow Arm board, but then deleted it seconds later because it helped nobody and was entirely pointless. But as I ty...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

This is probably the most "high magic" setting that SOI's ever set itself in. What it lacks is human-side culture to put the nature of the world around the characters into perspective. This. Also, I based my understanding of the IC culture/reality on what documentation was put out by Frigga in the ...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

But I'd say that magic shouldn't be something that even men and hobbits in Middle-Earth simply can't wrap their heads around. It should be mysterious, even fantastic to them at times, but the constant reaction of 'omg this shouldn't be possible, EVERYTHING I EVER THOUGHT IS A LIE AAAAAAHHHHHH' to t...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

I think that is a fundamental misunderstanding of the world of Tolkien. Magic is everywhere, in everything, visible to everyone. Magic is mundain. Coats that button themselves, trolls with magical pockets, dwarves with spells of secret, moon letters, etc. This is highly debatable. The question of w...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

Apologies for the triple post, I think this might help the discussion: Real plot device example 1 : There are ghost voices in the Inn. PC response : Basically, nothing beyond talking about it. Essentially gossip, no inter PC conflict, no plot advancement till the admin feeds the next piece of plot. ...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

Essentially, my primary problem with magic in SOI is that I usually have a PC that's lived several decades of life without ever coming across something magical and then has to deal with magic crawling out of the woodwork at the drop of a hat. That dissonance between what my PC thinks the world is li...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

If I had to pick one single reason why I stopped playing SOI (there were a host of them, but this was the most significant) then the ever-increasingly magical nature of the top level plot was it. To my mind, the Tolkien world is predominantly a low-magic world, as is SOI in general, as is its curren...

Re: The Dirty Laundry Thread

It'd probably be easier if you put up character names for those of us who don't know what ooc personality played which IC character. Eh. I'm too lazy for it. Most of my PCs are ancient memories now, anyhow, but I'll happily put up PC names for those that want them, so long as no current PCs are bro...

^ Addendum to this, re: post vs pre combat:

Our problems tend not to be 'I didn't get a chance to RP my death in that fight.'

Our problems tend to be 'Rivean is a twink and he's going to spam run the hell away, so I'm going to spam murder him before he does so.'

Re: Trust

It's a code problem, and it needs a code solution. We're all better off if we direct energies toward coming up with a coded system that requires (or at the least facilitates) RP . Everything else is a bandaid that doesn't work very well and has negative side affects - one of which is often going to...

Re: Trust

From what I've read of the thread (and I admit, I could not really bring myself to read ALL of it), I think it boils down to the following: 1. The problem with OP characters in the combat sphere is a new incarnation of an ancient problem: ROE & RP vs Combat. This problem cannot be solved by document...
