Re: Problems with Lake-Town, and Alternative Settings
I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous, and I know I'm always harping about SOI needing to be more in line with canon, but if I were dictator for the day I'd have us match Tolkien's timeline right up until the events of the Hobbit...and then I'd diverge. What would happen if the Battle of the Five A...

Just connect to www.middle-earth.us and try the default port. Or try 40. Or wait for a guide who knows what they're talking about to show up!

Re: Old players
For a while it was Osgiliath vs. Minas Morgul, with Osgiliath's soldiers stationed in a fort called "The Eastern Garrison". I think it was several years like this. Minas Morgul was closed to players for just a little while before the Fall of Osgiliath, which in a lot of ways was the high point of SO...

Absolutely! When PCs are offering to teach a skill, 99% of the time they're offering it both ICly and in a hard-coded sense.MarcusSaint wrote:Hold on, are you saying that if I don't know how to SNEAK or HIDE, I can ask someone who KNOWS how to Sneak or Hide to teach me and I can learn?!?!

I think two Barge PCs got sdesc changes, too, if I'm guessing correctly. I can think of at least 10 off the top of my head, although I'm probably undercounting!Jeshin wrote:I've seen about 7 day one PCs that I'm sure were on the Barge still puttering about Utterby.

Day One PCs
How many of you guys are still bopping along with your Day One characters? We're probably not at the point yet where that's rare, but I was curious.

Re: Scholars and Books - Memoriam Project
Also, aren't those RPP skills? So nobody in Utterby can read or write? A few players were allowed by special application before open, if I remember. And I believe there is at least one literate PC currently in-game. I can think of four or five in-game. Again, whether that option is still available ...

I did not know that. Whoops. Does it say that somewhere so that people should know? Also, aren't those RPP skills? So nobody in Utterby can read or write? I think there was a post somewhere in which Frigga said that PCs could MAYBE select Education if they cleared the character concept with her fir...

Re: Scholars and Books - Memoriam Project
I think if every book mentioned in this thread made it to the Guest Lounge, I might never log in to actually RP again. What we really need is a giant off-grid library where every former SoI sage/scribe/author PC is simultaneously available for play, regardless of when they ICly lived. Wouldn't that...

Re: Teaching.
Note: Teach should be a command that is used sparingly and not willy nilly. The teaching should be RP'd out before the teach command is used. Perhaps as much as a few sessions for especially difficult skills. That's based on the old Teaching code. Don't just do walk-by teachings or anything but 1. ...

Re: A good moan
To add to kingsfoil's point, one of the most underrated and underused tools in an RPer's playbook may be pacing. There are times when I purposefully put less into an emote or tell just so I can fire it off more quickly. I think it -does- make a difference, sometimes, -when- output reaches the screen...

Re: Orcish Sphere Declining?
If the Orkish RPAs are on vacation, I think it's a fantastic opportunity that shouldn't go to waste. If you're an enterprising player in the Orkish sphere and you want to see it grow, just make it damned fun for your peers and it'll start to have a ripple effect. I've seen clans in other RPIs that h...

I'm pretty sure you have to fail your roll, although how that manifests in-game may be complicated by other factors. Krelm or someone else who has actually looked at the code will correct me if I'm off.RiderOnTheStorm wrote:Do you have to fail for a chance to skill up, or is the chance just higher on a fail?
