Re: RPP Proposal

I think the essence of Songweaver's point is that too much player freedom can have a splintering effect on the playerbase from the few top-tier players each deciding to do their own, separate thing. His concern, I assume, is that this may not be ideal when we are still tiny. Sort of what I'm gettin...

Re: RPP Proposal

I've mixed feelings. In short(ish): this sounds like an idea for a populous RPI with too many good ideas and too many good players, and the need to rotate through them all to maintain balance. It doesn't sound like an idea for an RPI with a deficit of active players with good ideas and the energy t...

Re: RPP Proposal

I think what you're discussing was a bigger problem when RPP didn't re-fill.
True. I think my preferred design has always been that RPP shouldn't be currency, but more like tiers of trust that you achieve through your efforts.

To Play, or not to Play?

That's the question I'm asking folks. Of course, what I enjoy might be totally different than what you enjoy. So, here's some more specific things that I'm wondering to help me with my decision. Are there RPA plots open broadly to all players who try to get involved? Staff RPTs? Player RPTs? What's ...

Green Dragon Inn? Help threads?

Is the Green Dragon Inn forum deleted, or just hidden? It was the container for a lot of happy celebration of peoples' characters past, and I might imagine that folks would have backed up portions of the threads there for posterity if they knew that the public forums were to be locked down. Like-wis...

Re: Honest Initial Feedback from an OG

The one really useful thing to grab from the old SOI2 engine would be its archery module. It'd take some small adaptation to fit into the current engine, but it'd definitely be better than the OpenRPI's gun-code that's being used currently.

You don't need'em. :p

Eat and drink before you go out. Keep your money elsewhere. If you think you'll need a torch, take a torch or two because they weigh basically nothing. Everything else that you aren't wearing can stay behind.

Re: Honest Initial Feedback from an OG

A lot of that stuff mentioned in the OP (new combat, new emote/roleplay tools, new object variable code, chargen changes) derives from the switch in the Engine. SOI3 uses Atonement's OpenRPI Engine, which branched like this: Oldschool SOI1 -> Lost Tales of Beleriand -> Atonement RPI -> Parallel RPI ...

Hey Jdidds: - Keep your weight unencumbered, always. Do literally whatever you need to to make this happen, even if it means hiding excess items in the wilderness and risking them being found/stolen. Not only will this make the river a much more useful escape route, it will also ensure that you can ...

Re: Are we in Alpha?

This thread's a trainwreck. In the middle of that trainwreck, you're probably going to want (some form) of an answer. Here it is: And, more fully on topic: It's defined as an Alpha by Staff. It's not your traditional Alpha, no. It's much, much, much more like a Beta than any Alpha you've been in, a...

Re: Are we in Alpha?

@Brian My understanding is that the intention is for staff to never focus on plot and story (because it's believed that it only leads to staff burn out), but rather create a sandbox where the players are able to do whatever the sandbox allows for. The sandbox approach works for some players, but is...

Re: Are we in Alpha?

I'd wager if anyone got a plot or idea rolling that made sense, had player support. It would end up with enough Staff support to work out. I can say with 100% certainty from my own experiences, being the sort of player that does create and drive a lot of my own plots, that this is just not the case...

Re: Are we in Alpha?

I think that the suggestion being made is that the "particular group of players" that the game isn't going to appeal to just so happens to be the majority of the proactive players that can drive and create plot. Right now, SOI is a game for these types of players: - Players looking for "every day li...

Re: Shadows of Sparville II: Grind, Twinks, and Power Creep

That's a very entitled point-of-view, Mongwen. How many game ALPHAs do you know that even allow you to keep your avatar at all when they move onto BETA/etc? :p There's a reason why games do this, in development. Sometimes, it's about doing what's right for the game as a whole (its economy, its socia...

+1 Ceredir, +1 Rishte! (even if I don't personally like the retroactive Beorning/Veidreborg re-writes)

I do think a "finished"/"to-do" log for Laketown would be a good thing to contain in the newsletters.

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

Tolkien wrote very few hard rules about magic into his books on Middle Earth. Most beliefs on what is capable stem from inference, which I generally support. However, there are so many hedge cases in Tolkien's lore, so many unique "magical" events that only happen once throughout the course of his r...

Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

This all sounds like less of an inherent issue with magic, and more of an issue with plots. What I'm hearing, as a neutral party: - Plots aren't nuanced enough. This is a problem that can be just as jarring for your 'murder mystery' plot as it is for 'monstrous baddie' plot. - There's no strong docu...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

For what it's worth, in the invade Vadok Mal RPT that you mention, I don't really hold player of Haearn accountable (I was Galwen, the Guardsman that snuck in with him). Haearn attacked a lone goblin, and we let him run off to warn the other orcs. Haearn's thought was that they'd rally a group to go...
