Re: Magic in Shadows of Isildur

Icarus is right, magic is a fundamental part of Middle-Earth, but I would add that magic in Tolkien is subtle compared to how it has been portrayed in SOI, at least in my experience. I also wouldn't call it mundane - not to humans and hobbits, at least. To the elves (and to some extent, the dwarves)...

Re: Trust

An inconsistency does not always mean that staff are cheating, or trying to pull a fast one. I agree with this completely, and I think the call for standardization (from some of us, at least) is not borne out of a desire to stop 'those sneaky staffers' from cheating us all, as much as it is a desir...

Re: Trust

A newbie enters the fray! ... Forgiveness is fine, it's a wonderful thing. I think you'll find most people who play or have played this game are willing to give it - but they're also not wrong to ask questions like: what are you doing to make sure that some of these oft-repeated mistakes don't keep...

Re: Shadows of Sparville II: Grind, Twinks, and Power Creep

As long as the game model is 'start low, advance fast' to the point where no 0 RPP player can expect to be even remotely competent at any given role until they grind and twink, then grinding and twinking and power creep is going to be the standard metagame. A pwipe or skill setback won't actually so...

Re: Trust

Yes, any good game or sport is much better when the referees just 'go with what feels right at the time', rather than trying to adhere to any kind of pesky standards or 'rules'. Right? Nimrod, you and the rest of the staff, like it or not, are referees for the playerbase. You tell us when we're step...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

If we're discussing only the question of "should SOI be reduced to a single sphere", then the answer is no, unless for a very short time while an alternative is being prepared. Telling all the orc players to play in Utterby, or all the human players to play in Vadok Mal, is not likely to solve the p...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

You know, while the 'underappreciated/just be positive' argument doesn't always resonate (and rightly so, since it rarely addresses the actual problems being discussed), in this case Gobbo was basically saying 'Frigga doesn't do anything', and so it is very much a necessary response. In fact, there'...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

Yeah, I'm not sure how 'but we'll have thieves down the road!' or ' be the change by trying to start your own clan that still has to fit in with our mostly unsupported staff clans' addresses the facts that: - SOI is barely populated enough to support one sphere - having orcs and humans as player sph...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

The thing is, I love PvP - when it's interesting. I'd just like the options to be more political and nuanced than orc vs man can offer. Batts vs Harads? Interesting, there was possibility for intrigue and ransom, redemption and betrayal. Batts vs Orcs? OH SHIT ITS ORCS BETTER KILL THEM FAST! That's ...

Re: Is it time to consolidate?

Get to Laketown (GOGOGO), and then offer an Easterling/Dorwinion/whatever sphere that isn't best friends with the Lakemen, but isn't on 'kill or be killed' status, either. Two spheres, yes. Orcs vs. Humans, no.

Re: Losing interest

I don't think it's necessarily as much about killing (for most) as it is about winning. And I don't think that's really a new development in SOI PvP. It's just that winning and 'antagonistic roleplay' in a black versus white setting both usually equate to killing your opponent.

Re: Losing interest

Right, which is why you'd use your archery to try and kill them. Which is perfectly acceptable. But if you think you can open with a volley and then get a nice, slow, meaningful emoted scene while your enemy roleplays bleeding out, the odds are not in your favor. You use code, chances are they'll us...

Re: Losing interest

If you're using archery? Probably the kill. You don't shoot an arrow at someone to 'roleplay' anything but trying to impale them with a deadly bit of metal on the end of a feathered stick.

Re: Losing interest

To be clear, I wasn't suggesting 'consolidation', as in one sphere. I'd rather two or more spheres that aren't in a state of perpetual and immutable life-or-death, all-out war. Orcs are great in Tolkien's world, but - please take no offense to this, orc players - are better left to being an admin-co...

Re: Losing interest

So. There are three real issues with PvP in a game like this: 1) Different types of players, with different expectations. Some people are always going to go to code sooner than others want them to, and there's no real way to regulate that; at least, no way that will make everyone happy. So in the en...

Re: Bored

I think the crowlogs were something else, that popped up around Amdir, and they were these weird shadowy birdman things that would pulse dark energy at everyone in the room, and you rolled aura or power or something to resist and if not you got shadowburned like a *****. And they spawned infinitely ...

I wasn't referring to you specifically. In your example, the guy who gets his ear cut off shapes up. I'm referring more to PCs of days past who'd get an ear cut off, their eyes gouged out, both legs broken, arms amputated, and tongue removed, and STILL find a way to be 'unbroken and cocky'. Every ti...

Re: Embarrassing

So, beating down insolent new orcs because they attack you, actually disobey orders, steal, or otherwise DO things that are not tolerated... yeah, that makes total sense. But some of you are admitting to beating down new orcs 'because they talk back', and it sounds like that's missing the entire dam...

Re: Bored

Agreed, with one caveat: story is still beholden to the setting. You could make that RPI about gladiators in a cave, and you could write a fantastic and compelling storyline about oppression and rebellion and love in captivity, and you'd still have to overcome the fact that it's gladiators in a cave...

Re: Bored

I think you'll find that a lot of the people who enjoyed old SOI liked doing exactly that, SW: just playing an immersed character in an immersive setting, even when there wasn't a stunning plot or cunningly-wrought story with twists and turns driving them on every step of the way. Now that's not to ...

Re: Bored

We can't pretend that our current locations don't have the -potential- to be interesting, however. This is completely true, and my hyperbolic digs at Utterby aside, it's certainly not impossible to craft a story around the setting. But I do think it's fair to say that the opportunities for epic sto...

Re: Bored

I think SW outlines the specific problems pretty well, but Kory hits the nail on the head when he says that the setting really is really the catalyst for those issues. There's not a lot of room for intriguing roles and plots and conflicts because the setting just doesn't lend itself to them. Just th...

Hey, I did that to win a story-telling contest! Now I want to see what his PCs will do to win an Iron Chef competition. :D ETA: In all seriousness, yeah, it's ALPHA, but one of the earliest lessons from ALPHA has been "be careful about the clans and concepts that you add to the gameworld". So I don...

Re: Split: 0RPP Evil Humans, a Poll

I guess the thing is, I'm not against evil humans in the slightest - I'd actually prefer them to orcs as the playable 'badguy' sphere in this setting. The idea of bandits and Easterlings fits really well with this part of Middle-Earth. What doesn't seem to fit is the idea of just sticking an 'evil' ...
