Re: Equipment Condition.
Melee weapons perform worse. Armour's just closer to breaking. Never really checked out worn firearms on Atonement, so don't know about bows.

Re: Skills - What do they actually use?
what's the deal with longbows using dex and int instead of dex and str? I could have a Harvard education and be a genius, but it's not going to help much when I need to pull back a 120lb draw weight longbow with just my fingertips. By rights nobody in our setting should be able to use a longbow. Ou...

Re: Shadows of Isildur Wishlist
I think you've missed just what made the Superfriends thing so absurd when it was used as a negative term rather than a joke: there no OOC communication to speak of between the people who played those characters, whether on SoI or Atonement. On SoI, it was used to refer to some of the inhabitants of...

Re: Shadows of Isildur Wishlist
Fractures need to be addressed. The natural healing rate is incredibly low, if it exists at all, and the fracture won't disappear as an infection does until the injury is very nearly healed. On Atonement, we got around this by a skilled medic with the proper medication attending to a person repeated...

Re: Uruk & You
Tolkien himself conflated and confused it, presumably under the guise of it really being a Hobbit doing the writing or something. It is indicated that the Orcs of Mordor referred to themselves as Uruks if they were big and strong, and called those that weren't Snaga. For a speaker of the Black Speec...

Re: Anyone else here with zero RP experience?
I don't think anyone's harbouring serious concerns or what have you. They're just saying to try it out. Only a fraction of the game's players posts frequently on these forums anyway, so it's not necessarily representative of much.

Re: Uruk & You
Uruk is just Black Speech for Orc. Uruk-hai refers to a new breed of Orcs almost the size of Men, able to withstand sunlight, and first seen in 2475, when they sacked Osgiliath. By the time of the War of the Ring, Saruman had bred many Uruk-hai for his own purposes. But Uruk on its own is just Black...

Re: Utterby Wish List
Jeebus..I appreciate people putting time and thought into their characters, but maybe we should have a description length limit. Nobody has time to read a page and a half description or wants to have that much spam just because you dared to look at someone. Brevity is the soul of wit. All I can say...

Re: Utterby Wish List
Characters are craftsmen, fishermen, foresters, or part of a small and poorly equipped mercenary outfit contracted to protect the settlement. That's the setting as it exists. I think we'd all be a lot happier if people took a step back and considered that. I'm sure there will be greatly expanded opt...

Re: What do you love in Tolkien's stories, and in a MUD?
The characters themselves, and the stories of adventure, intrigue, or outright absurdity that they tend to generate, that some of us still remember years later.
I think the ones that I've had a hand in that people remember best fall at least somewhat into the latter category, though.

Re: What the heck? Some help would be nice.
Personally I'm not really sure why dual-wield would be more 'advanced' than sole-wield, but oh well. The long blade thing makes more sense, since swords would presumably take a lot of work to master. It covers shield use, and is by far the superior skill. Also, the skill description in chargen is w...

Re: Crafting Additions Discussion
Attempted to forage out in the bog today for iron, was told that there still wasn't anything forageable there. Not sure if that's working as intended, but reporting in. :) This, yeah. If the stuff's in forage tables in lieu of crafts, it would be great if rooms could be set up accordingly. Imagine ...

Re: Encumbrance
I had a PC on Atonement who could take on most easy mobs without a hiccup. This is only anecdotal, and may be pure fluke, but the only time I observed her having trouble with easy mobs was after inadvertently sliding past that 'encumbered' mark by carrying too much stuff. Not much trouble, but I did...

Re: Star Citizen
Been watching it since its announcement back in 2012, when I backed it.
Increasingly leery of it for various reasons. Key amongst them being their micro-transaction model, that they're pretty much incapable of keeping to a schedule, and that the gameplay of what has been released is pretty rubbish.

You know deja vu here, but I'm 90% sure that Letters has had this exact same discussion at one point on the old SoI boards, regarding crossbows/decline of plate etc. Vivid, isn't it? Probably? I write a lot sometimes. For anyone inclined to do more reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ar...

Re: Suggestions for Archery Fixes
Correct me if I'm wrong (I probably am), but wasn't the entire reason platemail went out of style because crossbows go to the point where they could punch through it like paper? According to the armor tables, unless you're using armor piercing arrows shooting at someone is basically worthless in up...

Repeatedly and with gusto, thank you very much. The circumstances of Trilnin's death still stand out. :P I should add Brian. I just can't think of a silly moniker. Brian as That One Elf. Wolverine. You know, Kestrel's a sort of anti-Superfriend, between the Black Numenorean and half-Terror.

Re: Anyone else here with zero RP experience?
Yeah, that's the one. The information related to the setting, attributes and skills on that is now irrelevant, while some combat stuff is now out of date (most notably how the 'bind' command functions) but the rest - about writing characters and such in a general sense, and the basics of moving arou...

'help newbie' might still be around.
I don't think we have a primer for getting started on the forum yet. I'm almost certain we had one on old SoI. Should probably look at sticking one together for here, now you mention it.
