Re: Social Media/Community Management

I didn't even realize people were talking about me over here, lol. No, I'm not a ghost. I'm real and alive, I assure you. People have talked to me on the phone, and at least one player has met me IRL. As for about myself, I've had two identities during my stint at SOI. I started playing SOI back in ...

Re: Variables

And it looked absurd with those insanely long sdescs. A dust-covered pair of shimmering-black-scaled, mid-calf-high, textured-soled cavalry boots... stupid boots were always messing up my snarfagling inventory symmetry. Well, I'd say part of that is not needing to include everything in the sdesc. A...

As far as orc songs go, while outside of textual canon, the old animated Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films can be amusing fodder for content consideration.

Re: Crafting/Skills/Races

To add to Octavius answer above: What are the practical differences between the old literacy and education? Renaming might be a decent idea, as the current name seems a little vague, since education doesn't necessarily just pertain to writing or literacy - nothing major though. As there is no free p...

Re: Armoury

If you want more than three grades of metal, you can split the crappy iron into actual re-smelted scrap and then bog iron which is historically fairly decent -- it literally fueled the viking age. It'd be feasible to say that the deposits along the River Running are of particularly impure ore, of c...

Re: General Questions for Laketown

Town nobles??? Don't you mean rich merchants? From what I read, there are no nobility social class at Laketown. Yes, the higher-ups would be merchants and bureaucrats, really - there's no "nobility" in the same sense as Gondor has it. Any take on this one from the staff? Can you clarify what you me...

Re: Rules we all should follow

6. I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them. Having RPed as bad guys (RIP, Cadhar Mahl) - I confess isn't this probably the most satisfying part of being a bad guy? Of course, he then tragically disobeyed rules #7 and #16, so - maybe the gloating leads to more pro...

Re: Alpha Play!

Red tape around who can go for walks in the woods with the local militia and rules they must follow sounds like it could be stifling or counterproductive. In my experience, not having a set rule and expectation about people on official patrols leads to an inordinate amount of time being wasted argu...

Re: Alpha Play!

I imagine that huntsmen and woodsmen fit in the militia. Then, add something like this? Indeed. :D I'd probably have that replace the original proposed "Merchant Guard" role. Also, probably with some weapon options (being in yon North, I'd probably offer Sword, Spear, Axe.) You could then have an e...

Re: Alpha Play!

In my experience, having more than one competing body for combat-types within the same playing can lead to problems. First and foremost that the number of people interested in military roles are then split between two (or more) competing clans, reducing people for patrols/activities. Which, I think ...

Harshlands has a "payday" system that gives you an income token each week. Depending on your skills and Mangai (AKA their version of Fellowships) affiliation, you'll then have different crafts and opportunities to turn that income token into various forms of income for different amounts of money giv...

Re: Alphabets and Languages

The Hobbit book has everything speaking a common language. Well, following Tolkien's conceit, the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy were translated for us into modern English by Tolkien from a copy of The Red Book of Westmarch. It would make for bad storytelling if half the time Bilbo had to wri...

Re: Alphabets and Languages

All I am saying is to account for this when choosing a local language for the Laketown people. The local language of the Laketown people is Dalish. However, Westron is the language of trade (and the language of Men that Orcs speak), so most people would speak both. Simplifying things makes it more ...

Re: Alphabets and Languages

We aren't looking in any way to inhibit writing or creativity. Just getting away from having a lot of extraneous scripts that were never canonical (I think most of them originally came from MERPs). I think if anything, simplifying into having less writing/spoken languages will make things more acces...

Re: Alphabets and Languages

I'll agree that simplifying language would be a plus. In our new setting, as noted, only a select handful of languages make canonical sense for anyone to encounter. And, if we can't code (or until we do) the non-Westron languages to work with the new speech-in-emotes code, I'd say that sounds like a...

Re: General Questions for Laketown

So we'll be in a city-state governed by some kind of a republican government instead of a King where the population elects their leader. I also read that the men are distant cousins of the Rohirrim and persons and places names will be norse-like. Laketown is unique of all other major settlements of...
