Wearing multiple pieces of layered armor

Postby Saellyn » Thu Jul 24, 2014 7:48 pm

This is going to come to a head and I'm starting to get sick of it. It's one thing to layer a cloak over a gambeson or something, but when you layer two pieces of armor meant to be fitted to your frame, you're taking it too far. Wearing two gambesons is -absolutely- stupid. Wearing a gambeson under a hauberk is -absolutely- stupid. You're twinking, and there's no denying it. It has nearly no coded benefit for you to even do it, so just stop.

For the record, gambeson:

There's actually 0 coded benefit, because the engine only takes the highest AC of primary armor and applies that, then applies something like half the value of secondary armor.

Since gambesons are all primary, you're only making yourself look like an idiot.

You're basically damaging two pieces of equipment -thinking- that you're getting two ACs worth of primary armor, then? Good to know. Thanks.

Stop wearing double armors you guys, it's -not- making you look smart, it makes you look stupid. If I see it in game anymore I'm reporting it via petition and possibly support ticket WITH your sdesc, char name (if I know it) and what armor you're wearing.

I like to RP wearing a front cloak cause it's cold. Middle Earth snuggie style.

I'm going to wear two gambesons and a hauberk. Just because Saellyn said not to.

I think we should lynch characters who conceal half of their gear or wear hoods in taverns before characters who wear two gambeson. They're on the list, tho.

A gnarly-looking orc steps in, or more waddles in, with his arms and legs stiff from the three layers of armor he's wearing. He looks pretty safe.

It used to be that you couldn't wear something that provides full cover in a location that already gets full cover from another item.

It seems those restrictions weren't kept when PRPI's other-wearlock code was put in. 'Over torso' (or whatever it is) doesn't check for prim_locs worn on 'torso' or 'about.'

This is still working as intended on Parallel, so it seems to have been something that was changed here:

You wear a spotty gray, fist marked flak-vest about your body.

<#****** / ^^^^^^ / ||||||> A yellowy white, bat wings marked flak-vest appears.

<#****** / ^^^^^^ / ||||||> You get a yellowy white, bat wings marked flak-vest.

<#****** / ^^^^^^ / ||||||> You cannot wear a yellowy white, bat wings marked flak-vest, as a spotty
gray, fist marked flak-vest already covers that spot.

If two things both cover the same wearloc, it shouldn't be possible to wear two. It's possible the armor that people are doing this with only has partial coverage.

As just a general sort of warning, this thread is running at snark level 11. Tone it down.

So, formal warning there.

Just as a note, gambesons were made to wear under other armor, as padding.

I know what you mean though. I live in Texas and every time I see a hipster wearing a long sleeved shirt under their buttoned up flannels, I want to slap them.

I think tunics should be filling that role (padding under armor), not gambesons.

Edit: A little wikipedia research shows gambesons can go both way. Sorry, carry on!

A padded gambeson would make sense under mail or metal armor (as an arming coat). The point of doing so was to make sure your armor didn't cause you just as much damage as the weapons it was protecting you from. But leather armor wouldn't have the same problem as metal, so wearing padding underneath is just...silly.

Anyone caught wearing extra padding under their leathers is a silly and should be shamed ICly for being a pansy.
