Website

Post by BoogtehWoog » Fri Feb 14, 2014 5:46 pm

My main concern with our front to the world is actually the website. The old website design from many years ago was phenomenal. It exuded professionalism and artistry. This one, while functional, is quite bland. And as the face of the whole operation, I think we need to try to get a new one or return to the old site design. First impressions count a lot. I've backed away from many games or MUDs based on website design alone. And I don't want to see that happen to SOI. It deserves a chance.

I am sorry if this is offensive. I do not mean to demean the effort put into the website. It is well-done for what it is; however, it just lacks the oomph that the website once possessed.

We do actually have all of the old website files stored and we did unpack it and play with it for a while. I've always loved 'Old Blue' and it was a fantastic resource. What we are missing however is the wrapper for the forums. *cry*

We made the decision several months ago to go with a more streamlined look and this is what we've come up with for now. Another reason we went this direction was ease of use and ease of change for future and current admins. The site does need some work to spruce it up a bit, but the initial impact is what we were looking for and we believe it's the right fit to take us into Laketown.

Personally I agonized over the change for several months as I yearned for the old days. We felt it was fitting that the website bloom from the ashes, just as the game has, from nothing. Everything about SoI is new, but the goddess of SoI has seen fit to bless us with her approval for now, so we labor on, content with our work.
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.

Its one of my topics to get some work done on the website, this will likely require a web designer or some fashion, but we'll work it out. Now if anyone has suggestions on what could be added to the website in its current version, please comment. We can always add to it. Graphically... the side needs a boost and that will take time, content we can do though.

I'd rather have no graphics on the site than something with a big (pixilated) "(c) 2004 http://john-howe.com" like is currently in the rotating banner on the front page. I think that unless there's clear permission to use artwork that Middle-Earth Enterprises i.e. Saul Zaentz might possibly think they have claim to it would be prudent to get those images off the site right away.

I do believe that SOI received permission to use that art along with others years ago.

Yeah, I remember some kind of arrangement being reached but I don't recall the details. I thought it was pretty nifty when it happened though!

There is definitely permission from all of the artists that have artwork on our site. Click on that little tab at the top that says 'Info', you'll find all the information about these agreements there.

Yeah... we're not super happy about some of the pixalated images, but the images were cropped to correct image sizes by me using pixlr.com - I've been begging for someone to help out with images from day one; I'm not a graphics guy, but I had to have the correct sizes to get things done the way we wanted them and this is what we've got for now.

I've posted plenty of links to artist's websites, that include tons of images that you can download and manipulate, or just do it via pixlr.com and anyone can help out.

Basecamp me some of them images and I'll get 'em pretty for you! Must have missed that >_>

Yeah I was going to comment on that also, but getting those images done would be nice. See how responsive our staff is! LOL

I'm glad that permission has been given, though having a link to that on something like a frame for the banner images themselves might be best. When I looked at Howe's site, all the images I saw were small - likely no more than 400 px wide at 72 dpi. I certainly understand why he'd do that, but it may make resizing them hard. One option would be to put several smaller images together in a banner "strip," but a better option might be to remove the banner altogether. Also, the current site has a lot of javascript, and I'm not sure that's the best choice.
