Player Owned Businesses

I played SOI extremely briefly way back in the day. I never knew what the policy regarding tavern keeper, tavern girls, cooks, and crafter types was.

If someone wants to be a tavernkeeper or a tavern wench or own their own shop, is that possible, after alpha? Is it something that needs to be paid for ICly or included in background? Is it something the staff have considered?

It is entirely possible, and encouraged. These are RPP roles - being a "business owner" is by default also being a Clan Leader, because you are expected to keep apprentices and employees and run a vibrant and enjoyable setting within your shop which enhances gameplay for others who encounter you.

As everyone has 0-RPP right now, it isn't an issue yet. I'll let Frigga speak for herself regarding how and when special role applications will be addressed.

On the other hand, as a new game, there's no harm in entering game and aspiring to your own shop and achieving it through gameplay rather than application.

I'd love to see all shops be player-ran. Competition is a lot more immersive when the only goods are being crafted by crafters and sold by PC merchants.

On that note, will there be crafts to construct buildings and thus open one's own shop without the need to take a role?

We are closer to this model than the old SOI one, truthfully.

Frigga will be managing the balance and oversight. Player-craftable goods will indeed come primarily from players; where that hits roadblocks in Alpha, she's sort it out.

Separate issues.

Utterby is small and will have limited clans to start; it is a little company town, so you need to succeed in a plotline first. How and when we open more independent businesses will need to be sorted out based on Alpha play and how it progresses. So, in a way, you NEED to do it IC and not through a role.

The idea of construction crafts to just build your own building and hang out a shop shingle is very freeform - possibly too freeform for Alpha, but perhaps something we test out and implement in Laketown. Lets see how shakedown goes first before pressing Frigga/Icarus on this point.

The idea of a sandbox environment with additional rooms and clans popping up organically is more acceptable orc-side, but again, not right at the beginning. Once things are rolling, though, quite possible based on what the Orc RPAs determine. That's a planned use of Stonecraft/Excavation.

So to clarify for players owning a tavern...

Yes this is possible...

In Alpha it should be done via plot/IC action...

In Live it might also be possible via application/RPP...

That sound about right?

The current tavern in Utterby will start with an NPC owner. It will have employees - stand by for Frigga and the RPAs to discuss that when they post an announcement about Roles. If you want to take over the current Inn, that is indeed an IC plotline. If you want to open a new competing business with the Inn, that is likewise a a plotline/IC action.

Yes. Or by plotline as well. If we're doing things right, it should generally be possible to rise to the same heights through IC action as by application if you work long and hard enough doing good things (making plot that involves and inspires others, engendering interest with it for other players, driving the game forward by this process, etc.)
