Would this mean we might see literacy available in chargen again someday? ;)

Wait, what?

People can't read or write?

Most of them can't. PCs with the "Tengwar" or "Cirth" skills can.

I did not know that. Whoops. Does it say that somewhere so that people should know?

Also, aren't those RPP skills? So nobody in Utterby can read or write?

They are indeed RPP-restricted skills, as indicated by this post by Icarus:
Skills - What do they actually use?

You can see more of Frigga's take on the topic here:

I think there was a post somewhere in which Frigga said that PCs could MAYBE select Education if they cleared the character concept with her first. I don't know if that option is still on the table. And even then taking Education as a skill requires several prerequisite skills, to the point where any combat-based PC that wants to go this route is going to pretty severely gimp themselves.

A few players were allowed by special application before open, if I remember. And I believe there is at least one literate PC currently in-game.

I am also a Guide. Feel free to contact me through AIM or PM with questions about the game.

I can think of four or five in-game. Again, whether that option is still available at this point is anyone's guess.

Amdir wrote:A sable-haired, jade-eyed woman says in Westron, her gaze returning to Mairi, her tone thoughtful, "This be a rather interesting [first-aid] class tonight, good thing we aint got no spies tryin to get information as distracted as we'd all been."

You overhear a coal-haired, sky-blue-eyed young man whispering in Westron to a sable-haired, jade-eyed woman, moves his free hand towards a sable-haired, jade-eyed woman's eyes opening them up slightly more as he checks them, "So...who is the female with the books? You seem to know her or at least fear for the books."

You overhear a sable-haired, jade-eyed woman whispering in Westron to a coal-haired, sky-blue-eyed young man, in soft, gentle tones, "Her name be Mairi she runs the homeless shelter in the neighborhood where all them murders been goin on."

You thought: And murdered every one myself, naturally. One papercut at the time.

Last batch, I think:

  • Careonvan's Record
  • Egthela and Nearby Fortifications
  • Enemy - Haradaic
  • Eoran Olamer's Journal
  • Sindarin Wordbook
  • Sir Drambor Nimrulai - Testimony

  • The Diary of Dambeth Astirian - Vol. 2
  • The Fall of Minas Ithil
  • The Foreman and His Shadow
  • Transcribed Writings of Lo'hta'runta'l - Vol. I*
  • Transcribed Writings of Lo'hta'runta'l - Vol. II
  • Transcribed Writings of Lo'hta'runta'l - Vol. III
*This replaces an earlier, untitled version ('Master Sage Calimiar and Master Istavarna Beryon').

Edited to note: I have An Introduction to the Languages of Middle-earth in bits and pieces -- Kestrel might have a clean copy.

Well, worst case we can patch it together from the bits and pieces; Mairi was only missing three languages at the end -- the only nuisance is that she skipped around depending on which she was studying at any given moment; I don't seem to have a log of her reading (or trying to read) straight through from beginning to end.

Re: Scholars and Books - Memoriam Project

Postby Vaire » Tue Aug 19, 2014 1:38 pm

Hello! I'm Vaire, and I was hired a few weeks ago to work on this project. (I understand there was once another staffer named Vaire, and I'm not her!)

The plan is to flesh out the Halls of Mandos in the GL, and include tapestries, books, and relics in each room that memorialize who we were and what we did, in that other time and place.

I'll need lots of help from you. And patience, it's a big job.

I'm working on the books first, I have 19 re-written so far. From this thread and from staff I have the texts of the books listed below. I know there were a lot more. I remember some that aren't here. If you have logs from the old days and can send me sections where you read books not listed, I'll clean them up and include them.
