Creativity in Swearing

Postby Hazgarn » Thu Jun 12, 2014 6:26 pm

This isn't at all mean to enforce a certain kind of RP delineate which words are "appropriate" and which are not (though opinions are welcome), but to offer alternatives and ideas for swearing that is in keeping with the setting.

Oaths:

Swear by something. It should be something constant, showing the solidity of your argument or oath. Objects or ideas out of nature are good choices. So are places, people or parts of the body that you would very much like not to lose.

Oaths can also be used as interjections to add emphasis or emotion.

Examples:
Nature: Light and shadow, smoke and flame, thunder and lightning, the Sun and Moon, the sky, the stars, stone, steel, rain, the seasons.
Body: Blood, bones, sinew, hand or arm (especially one's dominant hand/swordarm), one's legs, eyes, beard (or your mother's/father's/ancestors' eyes, leg or beard).

Profanity

(Some cussin' words beneath this point, so skip past if you'd prefer not to read them...)

There's no reason not to get "dirty", but choosing to use one word over another more commonly heard in modern (and especially in modern American) speech can make a big difference.

The suitability of these are mostly personal opinion, but some words that might work vs. words that work less well include:

Arse vs. Ass
Testicles/bollocks/balls vs. Nuts
Shite vs. shit
Bugger vs. snarfagle

Also, colorful euphemisms are your friend. Any time you can say something indirectly is great. Likely none of us would be caught dead using the phrase "beast with two backs" with any seriousness (well...okay, some of us might), but this kind of 45-degree turn from just saying you're "doing it" can greatly add to an IC conversation.

I'll leave the floor open here. Just try not to take the subject as an excuse to get overly crude.

(Especially as I'm not entirely sure what board policies actually are...so tread lightly.)

What about for orcs? I'd assume they'd do things differently than the humans.

Well, not to beat a dead horse and bring up the evil word "canon" but orcs don't actually speak any differently than humans in the books. Just not as nicely.

As a side note: While a "by [the] X" alone is the sort of fun and flavor than can be sprinkled as liberally as one pleases, actual oaths of the "I swear [by X]" form may bear a little more judicious use, since they often seem quasi-magical in their import. The average PC may not be entirely aware of this, at least not consciously, but it'd still make me happy if the swearing of oaths was taken less lightly in this incarnation of SoI than in the last.

Is 'damn/damnit/damned' acceptable or no?

Probably my most commonly used swear, curious.

I would say yes, because "damn" I believe is used in one of the books. I know "ass" is, actually, I remember that vividly when I was reading the Hobbit. I pointed it out to my 4th grade teacher. XD

I'd want to double check the context of the word "ass", though, because it seems likely it was being used referring to the animal or to call someone foolish.

It's still useable, whether or not it's contextual vs animals, or fools. XD

Well, you could use ass, but asshole ... would sound like an ass' hole, which just sounds like nothing we want a part of...arse-hole maybe in the Guard barracks...

I could get behind arse-hole--

Wait, that sounded wrong.

But I think "ass" definitely works in the donkey/idiot context, whereas "arse" fits better for the body part.
