Craft and Item Issues - Food

Postby Frigga » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:47 pm

I'm starting this thread specifically for people to note variable issues on meat/butchering/cooking objects or general craft wonkiness as I look at these items/crafts. IE - things specifically related to edible items (AKA Food.)

This is not a thread to re-dicuss food values/calories needing consideration/tweaking. I agree, and there's already a discussion thread about that. ;) Thus, posts about that here will be edited, moved, and/or compiled to that thread as appropriate.

So - let's use this thread for noting:

- Items/crafts passing incorrect variables
- Major discrepancies in weight between raw and cooked items
- Typos

Edited to add: Like in other craft/object threads, I'll delete issues that are fixed to keep things clean.

There's no longer a craft to burn meat. So I can't feed myself IG. :(

More specifically, I think roast plain-meat is no longer an opening craft for people who don't have the cooking skill.

If we can fix this, we could also add a chance of success to the roast charred-songbird, roast charred-gamebird, char whole-fish, and grill blackened-fish-fillet crafts. (At least two of these have skilled counterparts in the cooking craftset: roast plain-gamebird and grill plain-fish-fillet.) A veggie starter/general-cooking craft might also be nice to have.

One caveat, though, with moving our easy cooking crafts over to general-cooking, is that it seems to have weird and not always happy side effects for branching. For example, it's apparently no longer possible to branch roast several-meats from roast plain-meat. As things stand, a starting cook who wants to branch and doesn't have access to a grill or lard (or a baking sheet!) isn't going get anywhere without either (a) carrots or (b) mushrooms, which may be frustrating, especially in the winter and/or when one is inundated with meat.

Failure results in a plant (buckwheat?).

Hmm, roast plain-meat is now set to be an opener for non-skilled folks. Can folks no longer see this craft on the General-cooking list?

Here's the post (other than Matt's) that I was basing my impression on: Crafting requests: roast plain-meat

I'll have to defer to someone else for a more up-to-date answer.

I don't have the cooking skill:

You know the following general-cooking crafts:

chop meat-extras roast charred-gamebird
char whole-fish feed lit-stove
feed lit-oven pluck gamebird-feathers
fill jar-with-blood grill blackened-fish-fillet
light oven-fire light stove-fire
crack roasted-nuts boil hot-water
pluck songbird-feathers
I am not responsible for the actions of my characters.

a roasted chunk of badger
a roasted chunk of weasel
a roasted chunk of hedgehog

All of these are still weighing in at about 3 pounds, even though the raw variety is a half-pound hunk. I suspect other meat types have the same issue.

FYI - while I'm working on this, you might see fluctuations in stuff and changes to descriptions.

I have roast plain-meat and have the COOKING skill. It shows in GENERAL-COOKING.

I don't have: hull raw-barley and don't have the BREWING skill.
Was told it was a BREWING skill, then informed it was GENERAL-COOKING.

Hull raw-barley is general-cooking; it has no skill check. You can branch it by using the roast plain-meat craft, assuming you haven't branched anything else too recently.

That said, I think any general-cooking craft with no skill check should be starter for everyone. If it's easy enough to have no skill check, it's easy enough to be an opening craft.

The general-cooking craft chop meat-extras will turn a raw collection of offal (less than a pound) into 12 of a pound-weight hunk of raw $meat0 meat (presumably 12 pounds total).

In possibly related news, organ meat seems extraordinarily plentiful in our kitchens.

The cooking craft roast plain-roast will turn either a raw wild boar ham or a raw venison roast (either about 3 pounds) into 6 approximately 2-pound slices of meat, an apparent four-fold increase.

Edit: a raw boar roast (about 2 pounds) turns into 6 approximately 3-pound slices, a nine-fold increase.

Also, the failure message on roast plain-roast suggests it's meant to produce something on failure; it doesn't:

"You realize that one side of the meat is burning, so you quickly take it off of the spit. Paring off the outer charred pieces, you chop up the still-raw inside of the thick roast to salvage what you can."

While I very much appreciate how much faster grill plain-chop and grill plain-steak letting me cook two pieces of meat at the time makes cooking go, there's still something weird about not having any craft with which to cook the last piece from an odd-numbered pile.

Junk it and call it scrap meat. ;)

Unfortunately there are several usable objects that have this same problem. I find myself junking items because they have too few uses left to every be useful.
