The Surrounds

The Surrounds covers all that area outside of the Ring-wall itself, all the way down to the dyke-wall and beyond, as well as the Quay to the east and lands beyond, plus the mountain trail climbing past the Salt Mines westwards and reaching the Uplands and mountain plateau.

There are many Hollow-Ways outside of Angrenost. These are roadways leading to hamlets and are noticeably sunken below the surrounding fields and often lead into the streets of the settlement. Erosion over many years by carts and animals combined with weather action create these hollow-ways.

There are also many Milestones. Throughout the stretch of the kingdom, milestones are used to mark the passing of the rulers as much as to denote location and distance. As milestones wear bare from the harshness of the elements, or are destroyed in accidents, they have gradually been replaced with small inscriptions declaring the king of the time. Since the last king, the Commanders here have banned the inclusion of any Stewards' names, quoting tradition and awaiting the Return of the King. The Masons of Family Ondos consider it a matter of pride that the milestones of the Surrounds and properly maintained.

The major roadways leading out of Angrenost off to the Fords and the Great Road would remind us most of a proper Roman road style. However, the Road Wardens and workers who would once have maintained these are gone. This close to the Angrenost settlement, prisoners from the Salt Mines are sent out every few months to work on a few miles of road to keep them clear of weeds and damage, but it is a losing battle. The road west of the river is in far better repair.

The Dyke is two miles to the south of the Ring. Since Angrenost is meant to protect the western bank of the river and stop any crossing, the wall stretches from the western mountains as far as the river then stops.

"In all these regions Gondor still retained under its own command only the fortress of Angrenost, within which was the third Tower of Gondor, the impregnable Orthanc where was held the fourth of the palantiri of the southern realm. In the days of Cirion Angrenost was still manned by a guard of Gondorians, but these had become a small settled people, ruled by an hereditary Captain, and the keys of Orthanc were in the keeping of the Steward of Gondor. The outer fences .. were a wall and dyke running some two miles south of the gates of Angrenost, between the hills in which the Misty Mountains ended, beyond them were the tilled lands of the people of the fortress."
