Middle-earth: Pelargir
Pelargir is one of the most ancient cities of Gondor, and has served as
the kingdom's greatest port and harbour for generations. It is located
just north of the Ethir Anduin, and was founded in 2350 of the Second
Age. The haven was built by the Faithful - Men who did not oppose the
Valar, and who survived the Downfall of Numenor.
Pelargir often fell into disrepair over the years, for the Kings of
Gondor did not find its maintenance to be of great import. During the
reign of Gondor's four "Ship-kings" (Tarannon, Earnil, Ciryandil and
Hyarmendacil) the port's influence flourished, however, and Gondor's
strength spread southward with it. This brought Pelargir into great
conflict with the Haven of Umbar, a large port-city controlled by the
pirate Corsairs.
Under Earnil's guidance, the Haven of Umbar was seized by Gondor for
some time. After the great Kin-Strife, however, rebel Corsairs took
back the City, and Gondor's fleets returned to Pelargir. Thus began a
long period of strife between the Corsairs and the Dunedain in the
kingdom's southern borders, in which Pelargir featured greatly.
Pelargir was also of great importance during the War of the Ring - the
Corsairs assailed it, hoping to bring aid to the forces keeping
Minas Tirith under siege in the north, but were defeated in the nick of
time. Pelargir remained under Gondor's control for the remainder of
the War, and flourished in the Fourth Age that followed.
